    Centrica, the UK utility company, has not had the best year. The company has taken hits from outside as well as internal forces. The utility company went through similar hard times in 2007 when it hit an all-time high in shares only to begin a firm descent. In its latest reports, Centrica saw its shares hit above 400p in September of 2013 before they began their decline that bottomed out slightly over 300p. This 25 percent decline puts the firm behind the FTSE 100.

    US farmland boom comes to an end?

    The US farmland boom is showing signs of cooling down. Figures from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago show that values in the Midwest have decreased in the third quarter of 2014.

    Farmland in Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois saw quarterly declines of 6 per cent, 4 per cent and 2 per cent respectively. Indiana and Michigan both saw quarterly rises – of 4 per cent and 1 per cent respectively – but this was not enough to offset the overall decrease.     Art auctions reach record sales

    Demand for art continues to drive auction sales to record highs. Alberto Giacometti’s Chariot fetched $100.96 million on Tuesday 4th November, the second highest price ever paid for a sculpture at auction, while Van Gogh’s Still Life Vase with Daisies and Poppies ($61.8 million) helped a Sotheby’s auction to bring in a total of $422.1 million, the biggest sum ever recorded by the auction house.
